St Thomas Moko illustrates a moko jumbie, a mythical god-like figure originating in West Africa. when Africans were brought to the Caribbean as slaves, they also brought with them seeds, oral lessons, traditions, and their religious and cultural beliefs. many of the African cultural practices were forbidden while they were enslaved, therefore, they often had to disguise their practices in a festive context.
this illustration depicts the main U. S. Post Office building, St Thomas, USVI in the background, which is the central judging area for participants during the annual traditional carnival adult parade.
