St. Kitts Life illustrates a drinking monkey. the African green, or “vervet” monkeys (chlorocebus aethiops) were brought to the island from Africa by the French or the British, and they either escaped or were set free sometime in the late 17th century. estimates vary widely, but today there are thousands of free-roaming monkeys on the island. many of the popular beaches are inhabited with domesticated monkeys who often steal drinks and other items from visitors.
